Electrical Hints and Tips from The Pros Here at JET:
Every member of your family - including children - use electricity every day. Non-conductive wall plates, grounded receptacles, wire insulation, and other protective devices make electrical service safe almost all the time. But potential sources of shock and fire may lurk undetected in even the safest-looking home. It pays to make an occasional inspection, install safety devices, and instruct everyone in proper handling of wires and appliances.
Cords and plugs: Every time you touch a cord or plug, your fingers are about 1/16th inch from live electrical current. So don't take insulation for granted. Old plastic insulation can become brittle and crack; old fabric insulation can fray. Even if you can't see bare wire, replace any degraded cord immediately. Simply wrapping it with tape is not a solution. The tape can easily become unwound and can cause shorts inside the insulation.
And if one part of the cord is damaged, other parts may soon degrade. Replacing the cord is a good idea. If a child pokes a metal object or finger into a receptacle, the result can be disastrous. Install protective covers on all receptacles not being used. Or install a safety receptacle.
Fire hazards: A bare light bulb quickly becomes very hot and can ignite paper or fabric that touches it. Use a bare bulb only when you are certain it will not be in contact with flammable materials. Cords, especially those attached to older appliances, also can get hot. Check the cords on your toaster, iron and AC unit to have piece of mind. If not feels hot while in use, keep it well away from carpets and other flammable materials.
Did you know? A bare bulb generates enough heat to cause fabric or paper to smolder and ignite. In closets, install a fixture that covers the bulb and position it high enough that it won't be in contact with flammables. To avoid leaving the light on while the closet door is closed, we can help install a speciality switch that shuts the light off automatically when the door is closed.
Service panel problems? We can help! Open the service panel door and look for signs of moisture. If you see rust, find the source of moisture and seal it with caulk. Service of less than 100 amps may be adequate if you do not use a lot of appliances. But if you blow fuses or trip breakers often, it is probably time for a new panel. No matter what your needs, we are here to assist and offer affordable price quotes.
